What is Adopt-A-School?
The Adopt-a-School program, sponsored by Denton Independent School District and Denton Chamber of Commerce, fosters a partnership between businesses, agencies and organizations and the public schools. Adoptions are "tailor-made" to suit each business and school, depending on the company's resources and the school's needs.
What is the purpose? The Adopt-a-School program fosters a better understanding of the Denton public schools, enhances numerous programs and most of all, makes a big difference in the overall educational process.
The AAS program is not designed for just financial support and neither party in the adoption is the sole beneficiary. The students reap benefits when a business or group makes a commitment to their education, while the adopter receives a strong sense of satisfaction knowing that they are helping tomorrow's work force. The adopters derive a great deal of public relations in the community through the work they do at a particular school. By becoming a partnership in education, a business or group can make a difference through: • Mentoring students one-on-one or in small groups • Becoming a pen pal to one or more students • Helping with science, math, physical education, or history fairs • Talking to students about specific careers • Sponsoring after-school projects, field trips or contests • Recognizing outstanding students or staff • Donating equipment and/or supplies Who benefits from partnerships? Students and teachers: • Benefit from the various external resources, from tutoring and enrichment to expanded learning opportunities and special recognitions • Learn about the business world through first-hand experiences • Become aware of career options and the skills required • Gain a stronger feeling of the entire community Business, industry and organizations • Benefit by receiving better trained future employees • Receive positive public relations throughout DISD • Obtain a strong participation and ownership in education • Contribute personally to the quality of education in DISD • Gain recognition at the annual AAS Appreciation Luncheon and throughout the year at the school’s various activities Employees • Take pride in their company’s involvement because they can see “first hand’’ that they are making a difference • Enjoy getting involved with the teachers and students • Feel better about having a positive influence in the community and especially in a student’s life Who can participate in the Program? • Large Companies: Banks, manufacturing plants, utility companies, retail stores, restaurants, etc. • Small Companies: Real estate agencies, printing firms, medical practices, legal associations, building firms, design firms, retail stores, etc. • Government Agencies: Mayor’s office, fire departments, sheriff and police departments, district attorney’s office, post offices, military groups, etc. • Community Service Agencies: Service and volunteer agencies • Service Clubs: Local men’s and women’s service organizations, and business clubs, etc. How do you join?
