Stretching your mind
I'm attending TASLA this week. It reminds me how important it is to get outside your regular setting, take some workshops, attend a conference and expand your mind. I could explore some of these things myself and often do. But then again I often get bogged down in my work load and personal obligations. Not to mention hearing someone who has good insight on a particular topic. That was our first speaker we heard, Kim Cofino, Literacy Specialist International School Bangkok. She had some good thoughts on building your Personal Learning Network. Here are some of her main points.

Advantages of a PLN:
  • Open 24 hrs. puts personal dev. on 'fast forward'. Responsive, ask a question on twitter and get quick response.
  • Personalized. not only job related, bring in hobbies other interests.
  • Interconnected, growing together with others w/same interests
  • Online PLN is global, anything is possible - it's what you make out of it.
Some suggestions for starting out:
  • Start small. Don't take on everything at once. Choose a tool you think will be useful to you. Learn by lurking
  • Develop your online identity, 'putting a face to the name'
Although Kim recommended 'lurking to learn', you do eventually need to launch out and join in the conversation. Blog, join social networks, use twitter (as some possibilities).
I have started my PLN. I've been inspired to work on expanding. What tools are you using for your personal Learning Network?
