    Job Title:

American Sign Language I, II, III, IV

    Education:

Bachelor of Science in Education (magma cum laude),

Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, TX (December 1996)

Certifications: American Sign Language 6-12, Deaf Education age 0-22, Theatre All Level, General Elementary Education grade 1-8, Reading, English grade 6-8, Interpreting Minor

    Background:

I’ve known I wanted to be a teacher since I was a kid; I just wasn’t sure what subject I wanted to teach. After a short stint teaching American Sign Language in Mesquite, I found myself in the wonderful world of Theatre where I stayed for 10 years before landing in the ASL classroom. People ask me if I miss the stage, the lights, the excitement… My answer, teaching is fun! I feel that teaching American Sign Language is very similar to teaching Theatre; with the storytelling, the facial expressions, and the way you have to use your body. The excitement we have in class more than makes up for anything I might be “missing” on the stage.

    Philosophy of Education:

My educational philosophy is simple; learning should be fun and relative. My goal in ASL is to stretch kids beyond their comfort zone; to develop their creativity and think outside the box. I want my students to gain confidence in themselves while they learn to appreciate the language and the culture of the Deaf, by better understanding their own culture and language. I want my students to be better people when they leave my classroom, and I want to inspire them to be lifelong learners.

    Accomplishments and Personal Information:

    · During my 20 years of teaching I’ve had the opportunity to teach ASL, Theatre, English, Video Productions, and Teen Leadership. I have also served on several committees to improve the quality of education in our schools, and taught and directed at numerous youth, church and community programs in the Dallas area. I’m always looking for a way to be involved with kids in our communities & I love learning from kids of all ages!

    · I have been married to my fabulous husband Chris for 17 years, and we have two incredible children. Our daughter, Harleigh Grace, was born in 2012 & our son Elias in 2015. I love being a mom!

    · I also really enjoy having the opportunity to interpret in my church community.

    · In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, scrapbooking, and sewing.
