    The DHS Cultural Perspectives Cord Requirements

     

    The Denton High School Cultural Perspectives honor cord program is for students who wish to challenge themselves to step outside of their familiar cultural contexts in order to discover the world around them and their place in it. This will be evidenced through their participation in events related to the categories listed below. In order to participate in the program, students must have a signed parent permission form on file with the Foreign Language department.

     

     

    Criteria

    Credit cannot be achieved for activities that are required for a school course.

    1 point for reflection piece which must be submitted to your World Language teacher within 20 days of the event.

    Music

    (Maximum 4 per cord from 4 different cultures)

    Attend a live performance

    *Must be accompanied by a written/typed reflection piece.

    Visual Arts

    (Maximum 4 per cord from 4 different cultures)

    Attend an exhibit, display or other such venue

    *Must be accompanied by a written/typed reflection piece.

    Performing Arts

    (Maximum 4 per cord from 4 different cultures)

    Attend a live performance

    *Must be accompanied by a written/typed reflection piece.

    Sports

    (Maximum 4 per cord from 4 different cultures)

    Attend (or participate in) a live event

    *Must be accompanied by a written/typed reflection piece.

    Movies at school

    (Maximum 8 per cord from 4 different cultures)

    Must be outside of class time

    *Must be accompanied by a written/typed reflection piece.

    Movies outside of school

    (Maximum 4 per cord from 4 different cultures)

    Feature films and documentaries that specifically explore cultures other than your own.

    *Must be accompanied by a written/typed reflection piece.

    Literature

    (Maximum 8 per cord from 4 different cultures)

    *2 points per book

     

    Read a book from the pre-approved list, or one that has been pre-approved by your World Language teacher.

    *Must be accompanied by a written/typed reflection piece.  

    World Social Issues

    (Maximum 4 per cord from 4 different cultures)

    Attend a live speech, panel discussion, or other presentation about global issues, such as politics, religion, history, and human rights.

    *Must be accompanied by a written/typed reflection piece.

    Cuisine

    (Maximum 4 per cord from 4 different cultures)

    Order a traditional dish in an ethnic restaurant. Participation in the International Dinner will count as 1 point.

     Daily Rituals
     

    (Maximum 4 per cord from 4 different cultures)

    Visit a traditional grocery store, religious establishment (house of worship, book store, prayer room, etc.), or other venue that plays a role in the daily life of a culture other than your own

    *Must be accompanied by a written/typed reflection piece.

    Personal Production

    (Up to 4 points w/ only 1 per cord)

    Students will combine any two of the categories and create a product/performance and presented and discussed with a panel of
    World Language teachers. The International Dinner does not count in this category.

    *Must be accompanied by a written/typed reflection piece.

     

     

    Students should achieve an overall total of 25 points by the end of their senior year. Students who begin the process in their senior year will be required to accumulate the full 25 points.

    To receive points, activities must follow the guidelines on the criteria sheet. If there is any question as to whether or not an activity might count, students should request approval prior to the event.

    Reflection pieces must be typed or legibly written.

    All documentation must be submitted by April 30thby seniors. All others should turn their information in by this time as well. Remember, each reflection must be submitted within 20 school days of the completion of the activity.

    Proof must be provided in the form of a photograph, receipt of purchase or program from the event, accompanied by the completed reflection form and signed by a parent. The reflection forms can be downloaded from the DHS website.

    The honor cords will be blue and white and the student will bear the cost of the cord, approximately $12.
