• Grading Criteria

    1. Assign grades on a 70/30 percent ratio (major summative/minor summative) in AP and Pre-AP courses and 60/40 percent ratio in regular courses. 
    • General Education

        • Major Summative 60%

        • Minor Summative 40%

    • Pre-AP/AP

        • Major Summative: 70%

        • Minor Summative: 30%

    2. Publish one minor or major grade weekly and post at least three major summative assessments per grading period.

        • 3 Major Summative

    3. Provide opportunities for relearning and reassessment on all major summative assessments.

      • Increase the time for relearning and reassessing to 10 school days. Additional time may be granted by the teacher and campus administrator according to individual circumstances.
      • Note: UIL eligibility is governed by UIL rules and explained on our district eligibility calendar.
      • Teachers will determine the appropriate method for relearning content.  These activities may occur during future classes, before/after school, or outside of school.
      • Teachers will determine if a minor summative will be reassessed individually or as part of a future major summative assessment.

    4. Communicate so both students and parents are aware of academic progress, topics of study, assignments and assessment dates. This may be in the form of having information on your webpage, through mass email or sharing information which parents may view or access in HAC. (There are very few exceptions of teachers who are not already doing this.)

        • If you decide to do this please make sure that it is specific; “Grades are Posted” is not being specific, especially if you have failures.

    5. Each school and the school district will: seek continuous feedback and monitor effectiveness of implementation and support and build instructional expertise for all staff around grading practices.

    Clarification
      • Teachers will communicate to students and parents regularly by publishing at least one grade weekly.  If this is not possible, then parents will be informed. Teachers will also use at least three major summative assessments during each grading period to determine a student’s mastery of the course standards.

    English Language Arts Clarification

    Writing is a critical component of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and the State of Texas standards (TEKS). Completed works of writing are evaluated as major summative assessments. Students receive feedback on their learning through related minor summative assessments and when the final writing product is completed.

    Major summative writing assignments have a due date that will be communicated at the time the assignment is introduced.  All major summative writing assignments are to be turned in on the due date.

      • Students who turn in their major summative writing assignments on time *will have ten days for relearning and reassessment starting on the day the assignment is returned.

      • Students who do not turn in their major summative writing assignments on time* will have ten days for relearning and reassessment starting on the due date of the assignment. By choosing not to turn in a major summative writing assignment on time, students are limiting the benefit of feedback and shortening their time for relearning.

      • In addition, students who do not turn in assignments on time may be referred to their assistant principal for discipline consideration.

    *On time means during the class period on the due date.
