Hello! My name is Jacquelyn Guevara and I am the full-time speech-language pathologist at Nelson Elementary. The 2017-2018 school year will be my third year as part of the Nelson family. As part of the Nelson team, my role is to evaluate students with suspected communication impairments, provide speech therapy to some amazing students who have an identified speech impairment, and provide teachers and parents with resources and tips to foster communication skills in the classroom and at home.
I am a huge believer in fostering metacognition in speech therapy, which means that, as each student is able, he or she is expected to be aware of their goals in speech ("learning targets"), why those goals are important, and provide personal feedback when practicing their target skills. Additionally, I often collaborate with teachers to support carry-over of communication skills in the classroom throughout the day.
I grew up in the small town of Rio Hondo, Texas located in the Rio Grande Valley. As a high school student, I played tennis, was on the student council, played flute in the band, and was marching band drum major for two years. In 2013, I received my Bachelor's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from The University of Texas at Austin. In 2015, I graduated from the University of North Texas with my Master's in Speech-Language Pathology. As a graduate student, I fell in love with Denton and have since then called it home. Today, I enjoy leading worship, participating in activities with my church's youth group, and exploring Denton.
