Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! We are looking forward to a great year. 2nd grade truly is a bridging year as we reinforce and refine the skills introduced in 1st grade while we prepare for 3rd grade. Your child will learn many new things this year. Together we can make this learning experience a wonderful adventure. We are excited about working with you and your child!
We have two goals this year:
Each child will develop control of his/her own behavior.
Each child will be academically ready for 3rd grade.
Homework Your child will bring home a daily folder with an assignment sheet each Monday-Thursday. Assigned homework typically takes no more than 30 minutes and provides an opportunity for positive parent-child interaction. It also allows parents to be a part of their child’s school day. Typically each week there will be daily reading and math assignments as well as a new word list to help them recognize spelling patterns. We will also have projects in other subjects from time to time. Any unfinished work will be sent home to be completed and returned the following day. “Homework folders” must be returned daily along with the completed homework. BE SURE TO LOOK AT AND SIGN YOUR CHILD’S TAKE HOME SHEET!
Your child will bring home an additional folder every Tuesday with work that was completed the previous week, upcoming school information, and community information. Please review all work with your child and return the empty folder the next day. This process will enable you to know how well your child is doing in class. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions.
Student Portfolio Our school will utilize SeeSaw to build your child’s portfolio. The portfolio will include student work samples throughout the year.
Discipline In order to have a positive learning environment for all children we expect everyone to be respectful and follow school rules. Our primary concern is establishing boundaries and creating a safe and happy atmosphere in which to learn. We will also use various principles from CHAMPS (which is a proactive and positive approach to classroom management), as will the rest of the staff at McNair. We will communicate your child’s behavior and any other pertinent information using Class Dojo.
Absences It is very important that all students attend school regularly and arrive on time each day, students are considered tardy after 7:40. However, we understand circumstances occur that may require a student to be absent from school. Please be aware that your child’s absence will be considered “unexcused” unless a written note is submitted to the office within 72 hours of your child returning to school as long as it meets the excused criteria set by the district. Notes with all information included can also be emailed to email@example.com. Although we do appreciate a phone call or e-mail informing us of the absence, it is not a substitute for a written note.
Snacks Although we do not have a formal snack time, students are allowed to bring a healthy, non-messy snack to eat during class time. Since the instruction time will be ongoing, the snack should not be a distraction to the student. SNACKS ARE OPTIONAL and water bottles are recommended. DUE TO THE HIGH LEVEL OF PEANUT ALLERGIES, NO PEANUT PRODUCTS ALLOWED PLEASE.
Student of the Week When your child is chosen for Student of the Week, we will display his/her “All About Me” poster in the hallway. Please remember that this recognition needs to be earned by displaying good behavior and study habits.
Lunch Parents are welcome to join their child at lunch. However, it is school policy that parents leave as their child lines up to return to the classroom. 2nd grade will eat lunch from 11:30- 12:00.
Birthdays Birthday invitations may only be passed out at school if every child in the class is invited. You may send an individual birthday treat for each child to share, please have the date approved by the teacher prior to sending it. BIRTHDAY TREATS MUST BE STORE BOUGHT. Summer birthdays may be celebrated in May.
Please let your child’s teacher know if there are any dramatic changes (death, divorce, etc.) in your child’s life as this may affect his/her performance in school.
Please let us know if we can assist you in any way. We are available during our conference time from 10:40-11:30 (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday). Refer to the following contact information:
