Scholastic Reading Counts! is a computer based program designed to promote reading, improve test scores, and develop language arts skills. Students will select and read a wide variety of books on their reading level and then take a computerized quiz that will assess whether they have completed and understood the book that they read.
Quizzes are available for many of the books in the Alexander Library, the Denton Public Libraries, and perhaps books that students have at home. To find out whether or not a particular title has an associated RC! test, check the Scholastic Book Expert online. Click the Scholastic Reading Counts logo you see on the right of this webpage. The books in the Alexander Library that have a RC! test available have been marked with a blue sticker on the spine that says “Reading Counts.”
Our ultimate hope and goal is for students to develop a life-long love of reading. Students should never be discouraged from reading something that they obviously enjoy just because it is not a RC! book. Students are provided with incentives to keep them motivated as they reach the point goals for their respective grade level:
Level 1, students have their pictures posted on the RC! bulletin board on the wall outside of the library. Level 2, students are invited to an ice cream sundae celebration. Level 3, students receive a free book.
