My twenty years at Sam Houston have been fabulous. I love working with our great staff, hardworking students and supportive parents. Students at Sam Houston excel in academics, sports, art and music. They are well rounded and extremely caring. I feel lucky to be part of the Sam Houston family.

In closing I want to tell you about two great books I have recently listened to and read. The books are Mindset, The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D and Brain Rules by John Medina. I learned a tremendous amount from both books.
Mindset is a fascinating book that promotes a "growth mindset" verses a "fixed mindset". The author Dr. Dweck explains in Mindset that stressing to students that hard work creates success students and that praising students for being smart can be counter productive. I think this book is a must read for all parents and teachers.
What I enjoyed about Brain Rules is that it has practical, easy to understand information about how the brain works that is helpful in our everyday life as well as having educational importance. The book gives you 12 Brain Rules that when understood can help students, adults and educators be more successful. The webpage that gives a brief synopsis of the 12 Brain Rules is http://www.brainrulesbook.com/.
The 12 Brain Rules are:

EXERCISE | Rule #1: Exercise boosts brain power.

SURVIVAL | Rule #2: The human brain evolved, too.

WIRING | Rule #3: Every brain is wired differently.

ATTENTION | Rule #4: We don't pay attention to boring things.

SHORT-TERM MEMORY | Rule #5: Repeat to remember.

LONG-TERM MEMORY | Rule #6: Remember to repeat.

SLEEP | Rule #7: Sleep well, think well.

STRESS | Rule #8: Stressed brains don't learn the same way.

SENSORY INTEGRATION | Rule #9: Stimulate more of the senses.

VISION | Rule #10: Vision trumps all other senses.

GENDER | Rule #11: Male and female brains are different.

EXPLORATION | Rule #12: We are powerful and natural explorers.
