Sabrina Polk
Counselor
Hello Parents and Students,
Welcome to Calhoun Middle School an International Baccalaureate World School. I will be the counselor for 8th grade students and 6th grade students with the last names beginning with the letters A-L. My office hours are 8-4 daily. On Fridays you can find me with my Certified Therapy Dog, Reggie.
This will be my 16th year at Calhoun and I've had the opportunity to see many students succeed and flourish. Denton has been my hometown since I began at the University of North Texas in 1989 and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1992 and a Masters Degree in Counseling Education in 1998. I have been honored twice by former students by being selected as Who's Who Among American Teachers. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC, and was the first counselor in the district to have a Certified Therapy Dog.
My goal this year is to be the best counselor your child can have and offer another IB service learning project at Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, Texas. If you are interested in learning more about this awesome opportunity, please visit my web page entitled Black Beauty Ranch.
Personal Philosophy
I believe that school cultures should provide students with the ability to grow academically, emotionally, creatively, and physically within a safe and nurturing environment. As a school counselor, I will work with students to discover their various potentials and to learn the joys of becoming lifelong learners. I believe that diversity is to be respected and appreciated as the school fosters unity among our students, faculty, staff and community.
The MYP Fundamental Concepts describe the learning environment in which the student is operating and provide schools with guidance on developing their school culture.
· Holistic Learning- the notion that all knowledge is interrelated and that the curriculum should cater to the development of the whole person, the attributes of which are described by the IB Learner Profile.
· Intercultural Awareness- the notion that school communities should encourage and promote international-mindedness by engaging with ad exploring other cultures, a key feature of international education as reflected in the attributes of the IB Learner Profile.
· Communication- the notion that schools should encourage open and effective communication, important skills that contribute to international understanding as exemplified by the attributes of the IB Learner Profile.
