• Attendance, Tardies and Absences

Please call the office at 940-369-4600 to let your child's teacher know your child will be absent from school that day.  Your child’s academic success is very important to us, and attendance in class is extremely important. We want to make sure everyone is aware of the attendance policy, as the state law is very clear on which absences are excused.

Please review the 2017-18 Denton ISD Student and Parent Handbook for a list of excused absences.  All other absences, unless approved by an administrator, will be unexcused.  Failure to turn in notes within 72 hours of the absence will result in an unverified absence. Regardless of the reason, documentation is required for every absence.  Be sure the note has the child's full name, date(s) of the absence(s), reason for the absence, and the parent's signature. You can also email notes to wsryannotes@dentonisd.org .

A student is counted tardy if he/she is not in the classroom when the tardy bell rings (7:40 a.m. for Denton ISD elementary schools). Excessive tardiness may become a matter for the attendance officers.  These are considered Loss of Significant Instructional Time (LOSIT) and can be addressed by the court the same as unexcused absences.  Leaving school early (being signed out prior to dismissal) is also considered a LOSIT.  If a child must leave early due to a medical/dental appt, please bring in the note from the doctor so it can be excused.  According to the Compulsory Attendance Law, an accumulation of 10 unexcused absences or LOSIT's in a six-month period may result in possible truancy court action.

Please call the office at 940-369-4600 for any questions regarding attendance policies.  WS Ryan likes to celebrate good attendance; students can earn a Perfect Attendance award at the end of the year if he/she has had no absences, as well as no tardies or LOSIT's (except for absences coded as MED). In addition, for the 2017-2018 year we are adding more frequent attendance awards; students will be recognized for perfect attendance once per six weeks at our Wrangler Round-Up/Rockin' Wrangler assemblies.
