I have lived everywhere in Texas from San Angelo to Del Rio, and many places in between! When I was 14 years old my family moved to Mexico to do mission work.  I lived in QuerĂ©taro and in Guerrero, Mexico until returning to the U.S. to attend college, and as a result of this life experience I became fluent in Spanish and developed a love of other cultures and languages.

I became an educator because I care deeply about children and am passionate about learning.   I graduated from Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri with a B.A. in Elementary Education and a minor in Early Childhood.  In 1988 I became a classroom teacher, an occupation which I thoroughly enjoyed for 12 years.  During the course of my time in the classroom I had the privilege of teaching Pre-K, ESL, 1st bilingual, 2nd, 2nd bilingual, and 3rd grades before working for the Curriculum Department in staff development for four years.

I came to Denton ISD in 1995 and have been a teacher, a staff developer, and an Assistant Principal in this district.  I received my Masters Degree in Educational Administration from Texas Woman's University and in 2004 became the Assistant Principal at Newton Rayzor Elementary.

In 1986 I married the love of my life, Ken Ortez, and we have two amazing children, Ashley and Sterling.  Ashley is now in college and Sterling is in high school.  I am thankful for the blessings that they are to me!  In my leisure time I enjoy spending time with my family, ballroom dancing with my husband, quilting, scrapbooking, photography, games, puzzles, and reading.  I am actively involved in my church and have gone on many mission trips, including one to India in 2004 (see below).
