General Information

Beginning in the 2011 – 2012 school year, Texas implemented the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness, a test that will take the place of all TAKS tests.

STAAR

In grades 3-8, TAKS tests were replaced by the STAAR tests, which are more focused on the rigorous readiness standards in the state curriculum.

The grade levels and subject areas tested will remain the same:
  • Math and Reading Grades 3-8
  • Writing Grades 4 and 7
  • Science Grades 5 and 8
  • Social Studies Grade 8
Students in grades 9-12 will take 12 STAAR End Of Course (EOC) tests. The first group of high school students to take the EOC tests were the 9th graders of 2011-2012. There will be several transition years as our high school students who have already begun taking TAKS tests in high school finish out their graduation plans on the TAKS program.

12 EOC tests will be given:
  • English I, English II, English III
  • Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II
  • Biology, Chemistry, Physics
  • World Geography, World History, U.S. History
These EOC tests are not tied to a specific grade levels. Students will take the EOC as they complete the associated course.

DENTON ISD is committed to keeping its students and families informed of the changes introduced by the new STAAR tests and end-of-course assessments.
