Five Denton jazz students named to regional ensemble

Five Denton High School student jazz musicians recently earned chairs in the Texas Music Educators Association’s Region 2 5A/6A Jazz Ensemble, giving the school a quarter of the band’s 20 spots.

Denton’s Gabriel Aponte (bass guitar), Jonathan Bennett (tenor trombone), Peyton Dunworth (bass trombone), Miles Koroly (tenor trombone) and Alex Souris (percussion) each earned a spot on prestigious regional band. As a result of their spots on the regional band, the five musicians will now record performances for potential positions on the all-state band.

The Denton jazz program has received multiple critical honors in the past year, including recently receiving a certificate of merit from the national Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington competition. Essentially Ellington is the largest high school jazz competition in the world.
