DHS ROTC looks to fill need through 'Operation Drumstick'

What began a few years ago as a donation to a local food bank by the Denton High School Air Force Junior ROTC has blossomed into a school-wide Thanksgiving food drive called “Operation Drumstick.”

Denton High students and staff are accepting donations until 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20, with the goal of feeding 75 local families a hearty meal during the Thanksgiving holiday. At that time, junior ROTC cadets will work with volunteers that morning in the agriculture shop to box meals and prepare for delivery.

“Operation Drumstick” became a huge success last year with junior ROTC cadets promoting the service project to the entire student body and staff. Collected donations were distributed to families who are most in need with students throughout Denton ISD.

Those wishing to donate can bring canned or frozen vegetables, bags or boxes of stuffing, sacks of potatoes, gravy packets, bread products, frozen pies, frozen turkeys and aluminum turkey trays to Denton High.

For more information about the event or to volunteer in packaging boxes, please contact Lt. Col. Robert West, Denton High AFJROTC sponsor, by phone at 940-369-2000 or via email at
