Strickland student Brenda Pena wins district spelling bee

Denton ISD Spelling Bee runner up Amanda Halbert and winner Brenda Pena

Strickland Middle School eighth-grader Brenda Pena earned the 2016 Denton ISD Spelling Bee crown, sending her to the Denton County competition in February.

Brenda clinched her victory with a correct spelling of “temerity,” winning the Jan. 7 competition against 20 of her peers – three from each of the district’s seven middle schools. The competition lasted 20 rounds and nearly two hours, as students correctly spelled dozens of high-level words. In addition to Brenda, McMath Middle School eighth-grader Amanda Halbert will represent Denton ISD at the county spelling bee as a result of her runner-up finish.

The Denton County Spelling Bee will take place 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at the Lake Dallas ISD central services building, located at 104 Swisher Road in Lake Dallas. That competition’s winner will advance to the regional spelling bee in Dallas, where contestants vie for a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.
