Head Start registration roundup to take place April 18-22

Denton ISD’s annual Head Start Roundup, aimed at determining if young students are eligible for the preschool program, will take place April 18-22 at the C.H. Collins Athletic Complex, located at 1500 Long Road in Denton.

Head Start is a federally funded educational initiative that provides low-income children an academic, social and school-readiness foundation. The district’s Head Start Roundup event helps families determine if their children meet the qualifications for the program and also serves to recruit and enroll students.

Children are eligible for the program if they are 3 or 4 years old by Sept. 1 and their families are at or below the poverty level. Additionally, children who are homeless, in foster care or receive TANF or SSI assistance are also eligible.

To apply for consideration into Head Start, all families must bring proof of income (such as a 2015 tax return, financial aid documentation and three recent pay stubs), proof of residency (such as utility bills or lease agreements), proof of medical insurance (if the child is insured) and a driver’s license or identification card for the parent or legal guardian. Birth certificates, up-to-date immunization records and social security cards are also required for the children who are applying for the program.

Selection into Head Start is determined by a computer-generated list based on needs. Enrollment into the program is only granted once all district and Head Start criteria have been met. The district’s Head Start program is hosted at Ann Windle School for Young Children, located at 901 Audra Lane in Denton.

Applications for Head Start will only be accepted with all required documentation and from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the following scheduled date corresponding with the last name of the child applying for application:
  • April 18 at C.H. Collins: A-F
  • April 19 at C.H. Collins: G-L
  • April 20 at C.H. Collins: M-P
  • April 21 at C.H. Collins: Q-Z
  • April 22 at C.H. Collins: all last names
An open sessions will also be held for all children from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, at Windle. Families who miss any of the scheduled Head Start Roundup dates are encouraged to come to Windle and apply to be on the program’s priority wait list.
