Denton ISD retains an open water policy – with students allowed water at all times – for the entirety of all practice sessions, regardless of activity. The district emphasizes this policy on any days were the temperature is at or above 100 degrees, with most coaches and band directors opting to practice in the morning or evening if possible.
“We always want our students to be successful when their competitive seasons begin, but their safety comes first. All coaches in Texas know the dangers of working out in this heat and we’re not going to jeopardize anyone’s health by not having procedures in place to keep these kids safe,” said Denton ISD Athletic Director Joey Florence.
With high school football players and marching band participants taking on the brunt of the summer heat prior to the start of the school year, the district has a protocol in place for those students.
