High schools place eight on TMEA all-region jazz ensemble

Denton ISD jazz programs accounted for eight spots on the Texas Music Educators Association’s Region 2 5A/6A Jazz Ensemble, meaning district students will account for almost half of the 20 selections.

Denton High School led the way with six selections, while Ryan and Guyer high schools each accounted for one members. These students included: Michael Baylock, Denton High, bass; Jonathan Bennett, Denton High, trombone; Mitchell Case, Denton High, piano; Josue Cazco, Denton High, tenor saxophone; Joe Heffley, Denton High, baritone saxophone; Max Scalf, Denton High, alto saxophone; Grayson Spradlin, Guyer High, tenor saxophone; Luke Owens, Ryan High, trumpet.

As a result of their spots on the regional jazz band, the eight musicians will now record performances for potential positions on the all-state band. Each of the participants will also take part in a special clinic and concert on Nov. 19 at Eaton High School in Haslet.

This marks the third consecutive year that Denton ISD has placed multiple students from its high schools on the TMEA All Region Ensemble. The jazz band directors at the three participating high schools are Jesse Woolery, Denton High; Tyler Brinkman, Guyer High; and Eddy Russell, Ryan High.
