District places seven students on TMEA all-state musical groups

Students from three Denton ISD high schools were recently named to the Texas Music Educators Association’s all-state choir, all-state orchestra and all-state band.

Each of these students went through a rigorous process to earn their musical group’s top honor, joining a select few students in the state. The seven Denton ISD students will perform with their top-ranked peers across Texas at the 2016 TMEA State Convention in San Antonio.

The district’s all-state honorees included:

Choir

Denton High School: Courtney Lawson, senior, soprano 2. The Denton choir director is Mark Baker.

Guyer High School: Kate Gillman, senior, alto 2. The Guyer choir director is Stephen Evans.

This marks the fourth consecutive year that Courtney was selected to the TMEA all-state choir, becoming only the second Denton ISD student to be named all-state each of their four years in high school. This is also the third consecutive year that Kate was selected to the TMEA all-state choir.

Denton ISD has placed at least one student on the TMEA all-state choir for 12 consecutive years.

Band

Ryan High School: Destiny Lerma, junior, clarinet; and Luke Owens, junior, trumpet. The Ryan High band director is Eddy Russell.

Guyer High School: Connor Wooley, junior, trombone. The Guyer band director is Amy Woody.

This marks the second consecutive year that Connor was selected to the all-state band. Denton ISD has placed six students on the TMEA all-state band in the past six years.

Orchestra

Guyer High School: Ethan Nguyn, sophomore, bass; Abhishek Shah, senior, violin. The Guyer orchestra director is Michelle Hanlon.

This marks the third consecutive year that Abhishek was selected to the TMEA all-state orchestra and second time for Ethan. Denton ISD has placed 15 students on the TMEA all-state orchestra in the past eight years.
