Crosstown Rivals Square Off on ESPN, Sept. 28
ESPN will feature the Denton High Broncos and Ryan High Raiders at 7 p.m. CST on Thursday, Sept. 28 at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex as part of its Geico/ESPN High School Showcase that features schools from 13 states and Washington, D.C.
“People all over the country have a preconceived idea of what Texas high school football looks like,” said Joey Florence, athletic director. “Our district, and Denton County for that matter, has a long tradition of teams with playoff runs to state, so we plan to show the country what football in Denton County looks like.”
The Denton Broncos are currently undefeated (2-0) and are a year removed from winning the Class 5-5A district title. Under first-year head coach Billy Miller at the helm, the Broncos are looking for their fourth consecutive playoff appearance this season.
The Ryan Raiders (2-0) are currently ranked fourth in the Class 5A Texas High School AP poll and are coming off two seasons of being near perfect (27- 2) resulting in losses to eventual state champions Allen in 2015 and Highland Park last year. Starting his fourteenth year as head coach, Dave Henigan has posted a 32-7 overall record at Ryan High.
Due to high interest in the game, the Denton ISD Athletic Office has released a limited number of reserved seats which are available for purchase at both high school offices as well as the Athletic Department office. Reserve tickets are $9 in advance or at the gate.
All spectators will all be required to present a ticket, and current District 5 – 5A pass holders will be permitted entrance at the pass gate only. Members of the media should contact the Denton ISD Athletic Office in advance to obtain a media credentials.
The game was originally scheduled for Friday, Sept. 29, but was swapped with the Guyer High vs. Plano High game to accommodate the television appearance. The battle of the Wildcats will now occur at 7:30 p.m. Friday at C.H. Collins.
