Board names new middle school in honor of Dr. Bettye Myers

 

Dr. Betty Myers The Board of Trustees unanimously voted to name Middle School No. 7 in honor of Dr. Bettye Myers, a long-time public school advocate and community volunteer..

 

The Bettye Myers Middle School, which is located adjacent to Stephens Elementary in Shady Shores, will open in August, 2013.

 

Dr. Myers, who served on the school board from 1985 to 1991, received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas Woman's University in health, physical education, and recreation. She later earned a PhD in counseling from the University of Michigan. She has been a professor at TWU since 1961. Her career is distinguished by her outstanding teaching and service to others. 

 

Dr. Myers has devoted her time, talent and resources to serve many community organizations.  She served as president of the School Board.  Her service to the community was recognized when the city declared Sept. 26, 2006, as “Bettye Myers Day.” 

 

She has served in leadership positions with AIDS Services of North Texas, Denton City-County Day School, Family Resource Center, Flow Health Care Foundation, Cross Timbers Girl Scout Council, Kiwanis International, United Way, and the Denton Parks Foundation. She has received over 30 awards including the TWU Cornaro Award for outstanding senior faculty.

 

Dr. Myers is viewed as a great motivational speaker - having given over 130 speeches/talks and conducted 245 workshops and seminars with a wide variety of audiences throughout the United States and Guam.
