Course Options and SequenceFirst Year:Art 1: No pre-requisite. Available to any student taking art for the first time. This is an introducory course covering all of the basic materials and processes, history, criticism and ideas.Pre-AP Art 1: This course requires a recommendation from your 8th grade art teacher. It is an enhanced introductory course designed for students with a strong work ethic and middle school experience in art.Second Year:These classes are available to students who have taken Art 1 or Pre-AP Art 1:Drawing II: An exploration of different styles of drawing, using various materials and techniques. Explores cultural, historical and practical aspects of drawing.Painting II: An exploration of watercolor, acrylics and oils, with a focus on color theory. Incorporates history and art criticism.Sculpture/Ceramics II: An exploration of 3-Dimensional design, using materials such as clay (hand building and wheel throwing), wood, metal, plaster and wire. Class integrates historical and cultural significance of sculpture.Third year:These classes are available to students who have taken the appropriate Level II art class:Drawing III: Expands on Drawing II. Emphasis on problem-solving, skill-building and developing a portfolio.Painting III: Expands on Painting II. Emphasis on problem-solving, skill-building and developing a portfolio.Sculpture/Ceramics III: Expands on Sculpture/Ceramics II. Students become more independent and have the opportunity to specialize.Pre-AP Studio (Drawing, 2-D Design or 3-D Design): A fast-paced, intensive, college-level course for students who have begun to develop a quality portfolio during the previous year. For details about AP Studio, see the description on Mr. Reid's web page.Fourth Year:These classes are available to students who have taken the appropriate Level III art class:Drawing IV: Expands on Drawing III. Students continue to build a portfolio. Recommended for students who are taking the AP Drawing or 2-D Design Portfolio.Painting IV: Expands on Painting III. Emphasis on problem-solving and building a portfolio. Recommended for students who are taking AP Drawing.Sculpture/Ceramics: Expands on Sculpture/Ceramics III. Students continue to become more independent and specialize in their chosen media. Recommended for students who are taking AP 3-D Design.AP Studio: A fast-paced, intensive, college-level course for students who have begun to develop a quality portfolio during the previous year.
