What We Do
The developmental guidance and counseling program of Denton ISD meets the program design guidelines of FFEA (Legal) of Texas Education Code includes the four components. Campus counselors serve all students. The first three describe services which directly benefits students and encompasses 80% of the counselor's work. The fourth component describes activities which indirectly benefits students and comprises 20% of the counselor's work.
1. A guidance curriculum to help students develop their full educational potential, including the student's interests and career objectives.
In Texas, there are seven areas which have been identified for guidance curriculum:
• Self-Confidence Development;
• Motivation to Achieve;
• Decision-Making, Goal-Setting, Planning, and Problem-Solving Skills;
• Interpersonal Effectiveness;
• Communication Skills;
• Cross-Cultural Effectiveness; and
• Responsible Behavior.
2. A responsive services component to intervene on behalf of any student whose immediate personal concerns or problems put the student's continued educational, career, personal, or social development at risk. Topics of Priority in Texas include:
• Academic Success;
• Adolescent and Child Suicide;
• Child Abuse and Neglect;
• School Drop-Outs;
• Severe Stress;
• Substance Abuse;
• School-Age Pregnancy;
• Gang Pressures/Involvement; and
• Harassment Issues.
3. An individual planning system to guide a student as the student plans, monitors, and manages the student's own educational, career, personal, and social development. Students should be able to:
• Set challenging education, career, and personal-social goals that are based on self-knowledge and information about school, the world of work, and their society;
• Make plans for achieving short-, medium-, and long-term goals;
• Analyze how their strengths and weaknesses enhance or hinder the achievement of their goals;
• Assess their current progress toward their goals; and
• Make decisions that reflect their goals.
4. System support to support the efforts of teachers, staff, parents, and other members of the community in promoting the educational, career, personal, and social development of students. System support includes:
• Consultation with teachers;
• Support for the Parent Education Program and community relations efforts;
• Participation in the campus-based school improvement plans and goals;
• Cooperating with relevant research projects;
• Provision of input from the student’s perspective to policy-makers and instructional/curriculum planners.
