Certified Teacher Requirements

An applicant must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. However, teachers of vocational and trade classes who present trade and industrial training records in compliance with the Texas Education Agency may be granted exceptions to the degree requirement.

According to Texas laws, every person paid for instructional work in public schools must register a valid Texas Teacher's Certificate with the superintendent of that school district. Graduates of a Texas college or university should contact the head of the education department of the college or university to secure a Texas Teacher's Certificate.

Alternative Certification Requirements

To become certified through Alternative Certification, an applicant must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

The certification applicant may apply to a college, university, or Alternative Certification provider the State of Texas during their final semester of their bachelor’s degree. It is the individual's personal responsibility to investigate to choose the provider which is the best source for his or her individual situation.

Upon receipt of the Statement of Eligibility from the Educator Preparation Program, the candidate will be able to accept a contracted teacher position with the district.
