Teacher Residency Program

Denton Independent School District’s Teacher Residency Program is a paid, immersive pathway for future educators to earn their teaching certification while gaining real-world classroom experience in Denton ISD schools. Through partnerships with the University of North Texas (UNT) and Texas Woman’s University (TWU), residents complete their certification coursework while teaching and learning alongside experienced Denton ISD educators.

How it Works

Residents spend dedicated instructional time each week on a Denton ISD campus, working directly with students and collaborating with mentor teachers, instructional leaders, and campus teams. This hands-on model allows residents to apply their learning immediately, build meaningful relationships with students, and develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed as classroom teachers.

Unlike traditional certification routes, Denton ISD’s Teacher Residency Program includes $20,000 in compensation + benefits. Residents earn income while completing their certification, reducing financial barriers and allowing them to focus fully on their growth as educators.

A Pathway Into the Denton ISD Classroom

The Teacher Residency Program is designed with long-term success in mind. Residents are supported throughout the program and, upon successful completion, are prepared to transition seamlessly into full-time teaching roles within Denton ISD.

Each year, Denton ISD celebrates this milestone through a special Signing Day event. This tradition officially welcomes residents into the Denton ISD family as full-time teachers, recognizing their commitment, dedication, and readiness to serve students across the district. Signing Day reflects Denton ISD’s investment in growing our own educators and building a strong, sustainable workforce for the future.
