Denton ISD utilizes the check recovery service Envision Payment Solutions to collect insufficient funds checks made out for any district activity. 

Please be aware that if your check is returned, it may be re-presented electronically. Also, in presenting a check for payment, you authorize service charges and processing fees to be debited from the same account should the check be dishonored. These fees, as permitted by state law, may be debited as a paper draft or an electronic funds transfer, at our option. Each dishonored item is subject to the applicable state returned check fees.

Specifically, per Texas Business & Commerce Code Annotated § 3.506, the service fee for returned checks is $30. (Note that the fee structure will change according to any amendments made to TX law during a school year.)

Per Section 22.004 of the Education Code, Texas school districts that do not participate in the Texas Retirement System (TRS) are required to report if their plans are comparable to the ActiveCare Primary of Texas Plan.  The following Comparability Report for the Denton ISD Health Insurance Plan and the TRS Health Insurance Plan has been completed and provided by our Benefits Consultant, Higginbotham. In Denton ISD we pride ourselves on a culture of openness, trust and integrity. Hence, the Board of Trustees has adopted policy CAA: Fiscal Management Goals and Objectives-Financial Ethics.

Anyone who believes they are aware of a violation of this policy is expected and encouraged to report their concerns. You can report a concern or incident related to this policy in many ways. Employees may discuss any concerns with their supervisor, the Deputy Superintendent, General Counsel or the Superintendent. You can also make confidential and anonymous reports by completing the Fraudulent Activity Form. This form is open to all employees, community members and anyone who suspects fraudulent activity. 

The fraudulent activity form can be used to submit an anonymous ethics and compliance complaint. This aims to ensure that anyone wishing to submit a report anonymously can do so without fear of retribution. Employees may reference the District’s whistleblower policy, DG: Employee Rights and Privileges, for more information.

Employees are encouraged to use the fraudulent activity form in cases where their anonymity is desired.  Please follow the District’s standard practices for all reports or issues not requiring anonymity.

Tax Rate Information

Texas public school tax rates are made up of two parts: Maintenance & Operations or M&O and Interest & Sinking or I&S. The M&O tax rate is added to the I&S tax rate to create a district’s overall school tax rate. The total school taxes due equals the total school tax rate multiplied by the assessed value of the property then divided by 100. 

M&O tax collections help pay for expenses like salaries, supplies, utilities and other daily operating costs. I&S tax collections may only be used to pay down debt for school improvements, construction and interest incurred when voters approve a school bond election.

Tax Rate History

Denton ISD has decreased its total tax rate for six consecutive years. Since 2018, the district has decreased its total tax rate by more than $0.38. Compared to the district’s tax rate of $1.54 from 2018, the $1.1569 tax rate for 2024-2025 saves the average homeowner $1,782 per year.

Denton ISD is required by state statute to remit to the State of Texas all unclaimed property valued at greater than $100. The report is filed annually on July 1 for balances as of the previous June 30. See the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts website to search for unclaimed property remitted to the state.

Items valued at $100 or less are retained by Denton ISD and available for reclaim under the procedures outlined below.

The type of property determines the length of the abandonment period. The most common types of property issued by the district that may be considered abandoned are payroll checks (1 year) and accounts payable checks (3 years).
