GOAL Program's Copa Familia Unites Over 3,000 Community Members

The GOAL (Guys/Girls Operating as Leaders) program hosted its flagship event, Copa Familia, on Saturday, February 28 at Denton ISD's Calhoun Middle School, drawing more than 3,000 community members to the fields for a day rooted in the program's core values: Family, School, and Community.

Copa Familia is GOAL's largest event of the year, welcoming hundreds of families and thousands of supporters from across three school districts: Denton ISD, Lake Dallas ISD, and Sanger ISD, with over 20 teams representing Denton ISD alone. The event is entirely free and serves as GOAL's heartfelt giveback to the community it serves.

"Copa Familia is the embodiment of everything GOAL stands for," said Chris Ice, Community Engagement Coordinator at Denton ISD. "It's a day where family and friends team up with their kiddos, share the fields, and celebrate community through fun and friendly competition."

The event marked a special milestone, bringing the entire GOAL community together on one field for the first time since the program's November to Remember event. Throughout the regular season, middle school and elementary games are held at separate campuses, making Copa Familia a rare and meaningful occasion for the full GOAL family to unite.

Community and University Partnerships
Copa Familia showcased the strength of local partnerships. Texas Woman's University (TWU) played a key role, with students officiating games and connecting with young participants on the field. Volunteers from both TWU and the University of North Texas (UNT) donated their time to cook for the kids, including members of TWU's Sigma Delta Lambda Sorority, Inc. and UNT's Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity.

Thirty vendors were on hand to engage with families, including several Denton ISD departments such as Pre-K, Bilingual Education, Fred Moore Day Nursery School, and Student Support Services, ensuring that the event was not only fun but also a resource for families across the district.
