Denton ISD high schools post strong showings at Ryan academic UIL meet

Denton ISD’s three high schools – Denton, Guyer and Ryan – earned several top spots at Ryan High School’s home academic UIL meet recently, preparing the teams for their district meets in roughly one month.

The spelling and vocabulary competition saw the strongest performance from Denton High School, with Broncos accounting for the top three spots. In that event, sophomore T.J. Akram finished first, while freshmen Hannah Chen and Donna Son tied for second. Freshman Caden Young contributed to the school’s event performance, earning points with a fifth-place finish.

Denton senior Shelby DuPont accounted for two second-place finishes, earning runner-up honors in both news writing and editorial writing. Junior teammate Sarah Skinner joined Shelby in the news writing competition, where she finished fourth, and also earned her school points in the feature writing competition by placing sixth. The Broncos garnered additional points in the headline writing competition, with senior Zakiyyah Ibrahim placing sixth.

In reading and writing, each Denton ISD high school was represented, with Ryan junior Amanda Kerr finishing fourth, Guyer sophomore Liam Haber finishing fifth and Denton freshman Yvette Han finishing sixth.

In accounting, Guyer and Ryan’s teams placed second and third, respectively. Individually, Guyer’ senior Christina Iskandarani placed second and Ryan senior Nick Back placed sixth.

Guyer’s top finish of the day came from senior Leslie Fredrickson, who walked away with a victory in the poetry competition. The Ryan Raider team academic team earned points from senior Walter Tunnell Wilson, who finished fifth in the literary criticism category.
