For the 10th consecutive year, the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation has awarded Denton Independent School District with its Best Communities for Music Education distinction, placing it among just 476 education systems across the country to earn the honor in 2016.

The Best Communities Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. Districts that have been recognized by the NAMM Foundation are often held up as models for other educators looking to boost their own music education programs.

To qualify for the designation, school districts must provide detailed information about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses are verified with school officials and reviewed by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. This year, only 41 of the more than 1,200 Texas school districts received the designation.

This award recognizes that Denton ISD is leading the way with learning opportunities as outlined in the new federal education legislation, the Every Student Succeeds Act. The act recommends music and the arts as important elements of well-rounded education for all children.

“We are proud of the support for music education our district receives from the community,” said David McCullar, Denton ISD director of fine arts. “Students consistently involved in music study show increased academic development and have better school attendance. They learn self-discipline, team work and leadership skills through participation in music activities.”

Denton ISD has regularly been honored by the Best Communities for Music Education distinction, with the district first earning the designation in 2004 before receiving the mark every year since 2007. Every Denton ISD elementary and secondary school provides students with multiple musical education opportunities, including rare opportunities such as orchestra at the elementary level.
