One Denton ISD student, two teams earn top-four finishes at UIL State Academic Meet

Each of Denton Independent School District’s three comprehensive high schools – Denton, Guyer and Ryan – was represented at the UIL State Academic Meet recently, and each also walked away with a top-four finish.

Denton High School’s spelling and vocabulary team led the district with its third-place finish as a group in the 5A classification, narrowly missing a top-two finish. Denton’s score of 244 was just two points behind second-place finisher Calhoun High School from Port Lavaca. The finish marks the fourth consecutive year the Broncos have finished third as a team in spelling and vocabulary at the state meet.

In the 6A classification, the UIL’s group for the state’s largest schools, Guyer and Ryan each earned fourth-place finishes.

Guyer High School’s theatre program earned fourth place in the state one-act play competition, its fourth time competing at the state’s top competition in the past five years. The Wildcats have performed at the state meet five times since the school opened in 2005, each coming in the past seven years.

From Ryan High School, senior Damara Williams earned a fourth-place finish in the prose interpretation competition as an individual. Damara’s finish marks the second consecutive year a Denton ISD student has earned fourth place in the 6A prose interpretation competition, as Guyer’s John Fredrickson earned fourth in 2015.
