Guyer student John Fredrickson to perform on Broadway

Guyer High School will send a student to perform on Broadway for the second consecutive year, as rising senior John Fredrickson won the best actor award at a recent statewide contest.

John’s victory came at the fifth annual High School Musical Theatre Awards held by the Dallas Summer Musicals, where he and other Guyer students performed “Mary Poppins.” As a result of his honor, John will spend more than a week in musical workshops and top-tier training in New York on an all-expenses-paid trip before competing in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards on Monday, June 27, at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre.

In addition to John’s best actor win at the High School Musical Theatre Awards, Guyer was named a finalist in 11 other categories: best featured actor (Corbin Born), best featured actress (Ally Roberts), best ensemble, best crew, best choreography, best musical direction, best direction, best supporting actor (Tanner Garmon), best supporting actress (Ashlynn Stewart), best leading actress (Malana Wilson) and best musical.

The Dallas Morning News recently invited John to its studio to perform a brief portion of his role as Bert in “Mary Poppins,” as seen below.

Last year, Guyer’s Katelyn Cave won the best actress award in the same Dallas competition before performing on Broadway herself. More than 70 schools competed in the event each of the past two years, making it of the largest of its kind in the nation.

John’s Broadway performance follows another accolades-filled year for Guyer’s theatre program. In May, the school competed in the University Interscholastic Leage One-Act Play State Meet for the fifth time in seven years, with John being named to the UIL 6A All-Star Cast.
