Board approves calendar for 2017-18 school year

The Board of School Trustees approved the 2017-2018 School Calendar. Under the district’s designation as a TEA District of Innovation, per HB 1842, the calendar reflects changes that are intended to drive more effective learning and the desires of our local community.

A change in state statue also caused an adjustment in school times as schools are no longer mandated to hold class on a designated number of days, but for a specific number of required minutes. The 2017-2018 calendar plans for 440 minutes each day for a total of  75,635 minutes in the year.

Daily start and end times include:

                                Elementary schools 7:40 a.m. – 3 p.m.

                                Middle schools 8:15 a.m. – 3:35 p.m.

                                High schools 8:50 a.m. – 4:10 p.m.

The 2017-2018 School Calendar features an earlier state date with freshmen across the district beginning class on Tuesday, Aug. 15 for Freshmen First Day. The official first day of school for all students is Wednesday, Aug. 16.

Elementary campuses have traditionally released students early during one full week in October to host parent/teacher conferences. After gathering feedback, conferences will be hosted on one date in October.

Early release times include:

                Elementary schools 7:40 a.m. – 12 noon

                Middle schools 8:15 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

                High schools 8:50 a.m. – 1:05 p.m.

Of note, the school year will end in May with four high school graduations for the Class of 2018 celebrated during the afternoons and evenings of Wednesday, May 24, and Thursday, May 25.
