For the 11th consecutive year, the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation has awarded Denton Independent School District with its Best Communities for Music Education distinction, placing it among just 527 education systems across the country to earn the honor in 2017.

The Best Communities Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. Districts that have been recognized by the NAMM Foundation are often held up as models for other educators looking to boost their own music education programs.

To qualify for the designation, school districts must provide detailed information about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses are verified with school officials and reviewed by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

Denton ISD has regularly been honored by the Best Communities for Music Education distinction, with the district first earning the designation in 2004 before receiving the mark every year since 2007. Every Denton ISD elementary and secondary school provides students with multiple musical education opportunities, including rare opportunities such as orchestra at the elementary level.
