First Ever Cross-Foundation Golf Event a Success

The Jim Collin/Steve Allen Memorial Golf Event, the first annual joint effort  by the Lewisville ISD Education Foundation (LEF) and the Denton Public School Foundation (DPSF), grossed over $100,000 for student scholarships. The net proceeds will be shared equally by both Foundations to award scholarships to graduating seniors.

Denton Country Club played host to the First Annual Collin/Allen Memorial Event in honor of two area businessmen, Steve Allen and Jim Collin. Allen, who unexpectedly passed away in 2016, was well known in the Lewisville ISD community and served on the LISD school board from 1986-1998. He sponsored numerous fundraising initiatives and charity events in the area. Meanwhile, Collin was a staple in the Denton ISD community. When he passed away in 2012, many of his friends at Denton Country Club established the Jim Collin/Denton Country Club Business Scholarship in his memory. Both members of the Denton Country Club, each seemed to never meet a stranger, loved people and enjoyed their communities. This year’s event and those to follow will ensure future funding of the Collin scholarship and will create a new scholarship in Allen’s name.

Included in the event were four possible hole-in-one opportunities offering $300,000 in total prizes. While no one scored an ace this year, one golfer did come within six inches of winning $100,000!

This year’s winning team was Certainty Home Loans with players Jim Juergens, John Aspinwall, Marcus Jones and Marco Scarola. Team Nelson finished in second place with Bonded Lightning Protection Systems finishing third.

Certainty Home Loans of Highland Village represented LEF and was awarded the Superintendent’s Cup, which will now stay in Lewisville ISD Superintendent Dr. Kevin Rogers’ office until next year’s event. DPSF Executive Director Jackie Jackson vowed, “Denton ISD will be at better strength for
next year’s event so Dr. [Jamie] Wilson can get that trophy.” To view photos from the event, please click here.

The 2017 Jim Collin/Steve Allen Memorial Golf Event was the inaugural event to “establish a co-charity event for deserving Denton County high school
seniors whose dreams of college can be fulfilled,” according to Connie Pelphrey, Executive Director of LEF.

“This makes a perennial opportunity for North Texas businesses and citizens to contribute to both foundations while enjoying a beautiful day at Denton Country Club,” noted one Gold sponsor, Rudy Kobus of Expert Tool & Machine. “This was absolutely a first-class production. The corporate signage was the best and most I’d ever seen. Definitely got my bang for the buck.”

The event included a competitive golf tournament along with complimentary lunch, beverages, dinner reception and awards ceremony.

Last year, LEF awarded LISD’s 2017 seniors 292 scholarships for a total of $187,205 and nearly $180,000 in grants to teachers and campuses in the past year. DPSF distributed scholarships to 138 seniors in 2017 and will award nearly $110,000 to teachers and staff for grants in December.
