Downtown Restaurant Association Holds Fundraiser to Pay Off School Lunch Balances

Two Denton ISD graduates and local restaurant owners, John Williams (Oak Street) and Corey Bobbitt (Komodo Loco), created a one-day festival in 2018 to address the concern over students not being able to pay off their school lunch balances.

Recently, year two of the Denton Mac and Cheese Festival was held with the help of district signature sponsor, AccessBank Texas. The event benefitted the Denton ISD Child Nutrition Department. Tickets to the event sold out within 24 hours.

This year’s event took place on Sunday, November 3rd, as thousands of Dentonites lined the closed Oakland Street near the square to sample macaroni and cheese prepared by 26 local restaurants and organizations. The event raised more than $8,100 with proceeds used to clear delinquent student lunch balances across the district.

Photos of the event can be found here.

“Our hard-working Child Nutrition staff works diligently with families to reconcile negative balances and it is important to know that our children are always provided a meal regardless of their lunch account balance,” says Chris Bomberger, Denton ISD Executive Director of Child Nutrition and Benefits. “We cannot thank the organizers of this event enough because their generous donation goes a long way towards giving students the peace of mind, they often need to focus on their classwork daily when they are at school.”

Mac and Cheese Festival winners included Po-K Loco, first place; The Bearded Monk, second place; and Hannah’s Off the Square, third place.

Special thanks to participants that included: Komodo Loco, Caskey’s Bar & Grill, Riprocks Bar & Grill, Mulberry Street Cantina, AccessBank Texas, Guaranty Bank & Trust, Sweetwater Grill, Mellow Mushroom, East Side, Juicy Pig Barbecue, 940’s Kitchen, The Loophole, Local Pint, The Chestnut Tree, Ten: One Artisan Cheese, Queenie’s Steakhouse, 2 Charlies, Armadillo Ale Works, Denton Co.
