Two Denton ISD Students Advance to County Spelling Bee
Strickland Middle Schoolseventh-grader Ava Dennis and Calhoun Middle School seventh-grader Sylvia Rahmlow finished first and second respectively in the district spelling bee and will represent Denton ISD at the Denton County Spelling Bee at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb.2.
This year, 178 students from across the district poured countless hours of studying and preparation into the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition. The journey to the national-level competition begins with campus-level competitions at our middle schools.
Campus-level spelling contests produced 14 winners who then advanced to the district-level. In previous years, students were called one by one to take their turn at the microphone in front of a panel of judges to spell words of varying difficulty. However, this year’s competition was all virtual due to the pandemic.
In a virtual format, students had to both spell and define words in a timed online test featuring 50 questions over 30 minutes. They were provided a quiet testing environment on their campus, and using a computer and headphones completed the test utilizing the Scripps-Howard online testing platform.
Congratulations to all of our participants and campuses.
