Fred Younkman named principal at Fred Moore High School
Fred Younkman, associate principal at Billy Ryan High School, has been named the new principal of Fred Moore High School. He replaces Jacqueline San Miguel-Lozano, who was recently named principal at Calhoun Middle School. Both principals will begin their respective roles on July 1.
“I am very excited to have the opportunity to lead Fred Moore High School, helping students reach their goals and it excites me that this position will allow me to do just that,” said Dr. Younkman. “I have appreciated the work from all of the people I have been associated with at Ryan High School over the years and my experience in working with all types of programs has certainly been a memory that I will cherish and I will rely on to help me be successful at Fred Moore in the years to come.”
Dr. Younkman brings 31 years of campus leadership experience to the position having spent 17 years as a classroom teacher and coach, and another 14 years in campus administration.
In 1989, he began his career in education as a teacher and coach in Ennis. After nine years teaching and coaching at various stops in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex, he joined Denton ISD as a teacher and assistant varsity basketball coach at Ryan High School in 1998.
In 2000, Dr. Younkman helped lead the Ryan High School Boys’ Basketball team to the UIL Class 4A State Championship. In 2001, he became the head basketball coach at Jesuit College Preparatory, a private, Catholic school for young men founded in 1942, a role he held for four years.
In the fall of 2005, he returned to Denton ISD to help open Guyer High School, serving as an assistant coach for a year, then administrator for the next four years on campus.
In 2010, Dr. Younkman re-joined the staff at Ryan High School, this time as an assistant principal. He would serve in the campus leadership capacity until 2015 when he was named the school’s Associate Principal.
“Dr. Younkman is a leader among leaders,” said Dr. Gwen Perkins, area superintendent of academic programs. “He is committed to creating opportunities for students to be successful regardless of their circumstances. This is something he has been doing for years as the associate principal of Ryan High School. Having Dr. Younkman lead Fred Moore High School will be a true asset to the students and families we serve.”
Dr. Younkman earned his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Dallas Baptist University. He later earned a master’s degree in educational administration and a doctorate in educational leadership both from the University of North Texas.
Dr. Younkman has been married to Monica Younkman for the past 40 years, and they have two daughters, Melanie and Whitney, both graduates of Ryan High School. Whitney is also an educator in Denton ISD. The Younkmans have three grandchildren, including a 2020 Ryan High School graduate, a current junior at Ryan High School, and a 4th grader at Alexander Elementary.
