Denton ISD Earns "A" Superior Rating in State's Financial Accountability System

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has awarded Denton ISD an “A,” Superior rating in the School Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST).

This marks the district’s 23rd consecutive year earning a Superior rating in the state’s highest fiscal accountability system, which recognizes school districts that demonstrate strong and transparent financial management practices.

The School FIRST rating system is based on 20 financial indicators, which are scored to ensure that local tax dollars are being managed with efficiency, transparency, and responsibility.

“Denton ISD’s continued achievement in earning the state’s highest rating reflects our district’s commitment to responsible fiscal stewardship,” said Dr. Susannah O’Bara, Superintendent of Schools. “Our Board of Trustees and administration work diligently to ensure taxpayer dollars are managed effectively so that resources directly support our students, staff, and community.”

Dr. Jeremy Thompson, Deputy Superintendent, noted the district’s ongoing focus on improving financial practices as Denton ISD continues to grow. “Maintaining 23 consecutive years of Superior ratings is not just a reflection of sound financial management, it represents the culture of accountability that exists throughout our organization,” Thompson said. “Our financial team is intentional about planning for the future while also making sure we are maximizing every dollar today in support of teaching and learning.”

School FIRST was established with Senate Bill 875 of the 76th Texas Legislature and later amended under House Bill 5 of the 83rd Texas Legislature. Because of the complexity of Texas school finance, the rating system was designed to encourage and reinforce sound financial management in public schools.
