Texas Motor Speedway will host Class of 2020 Commencement Ceremonies
Denton ISD is partnering with Texas Motor Speedway and fellow Denton County school districts to host in-person graduation ceremonies on their originally scheduled dates, providing families with a venue that offers ample space to ensure all health precautions are met during the COVID-19 pandemic.
All five Denton ISD high schools will retain their originally scheduled graduation dates of May 21 and May 22 as well as close to their originally planned times.
Graduation times for high schools are as follows:
Ryan High School: Thursday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m.
Fred Moore High School: Friday, May 22 at 8:30 a.m.
Braswell High School: Friday, May 22 at 11 a.m.
Guyer High School: Friday, May 22 at 3 p.m.
Denton High School: Friday, May 22 at 7 p.m.
Graduating students and their families will receive additional logistical information about the ceremonies, such as arrival times and parking, directly from their campus leaders in the day ahead.
Texas Motor Speedway has the capability to allow families to attend commencement ceremonies without leaving their vehicles. Graduates will receive their diplomas on “Victory Lane” in a “hands-free” style to respect the social distancing guidelines outlined by Denton County Health Services.
Graduates, wearing academic regalia in addition to masks, will walk across a staging area to receive their diploma. The custom masks that match their caps and gowns are being made by Jostens and will be distributed to graduates upon arrival.
Texas Motor Speedway will project the ceremony on “Big Hoss,” a 12-story, 218-foot-wide video board to ensure that every graduate is seen by those in attendance, both in-person and virtually. Family members who are in high-risk categories for contracting COVID-19, or who are currently quarantined, are asked to remain at home and watch via Livestream.
“Efforts to make this happen for our graduates have been extraordinary – from Texas Motor Speedway, Judge Andy Eads, Jostens and our area superintendents – all stand committed to creating an amazing experience for students who have earned this honor,” said Dr. Jamie Wilson, superintendent of schools.
Texas Motor Speedway, 3545 Lone Star Circle, is a NASCAR speedway located in the northernmost portion of the city of Fort Worth but located in Denton County.
