Homecoming for New Denton High Head Boys Basketball Coach
Denton ISD has named Michael Thomas, head boys basketball coach at Calvert High School, as the next head boys basketball coach at Denton High School. Coach Thomas has amassed a 158-40 overall record during his coaching career. He replaces Harold Jackson, who has held the position since 2004. Coach Thomas is relocating to Denton and will meet his new team in the next two weeks.
“I’m thrilled to be named the new basketball coach at Denton High and can’t wait to meet my players and get started in the gym,” said Coach Thomas. “There’s a lot of buzz right now with the opening of the new campus in the fall - a lot of excitement and I can’t wait to be a part of it. My dad used to be the head boys basketball coach at Denton High and my sister is the Lady Broncos girls basketball coach currently, so Denton High is home to me.”
Coach Thomas brings a wealth of head coaching experience and success to the Broncos basketball program. This past season, he led Calvert High School to a 26-5 overall record and a Class A state semifinal appearance. In his three seasons at the helm at Calvert, he led them to a 78-8 record, a state tournament appearance, a regional championship and back-to-back area championships.
An eight-year coaching veteran, Coach Thomas has never had a losing record and has led his teams to the playoffs in every season but one. His coaching career began in 2014 as head coach at Cushing High School in east Texas. From there, he moved to Laneville High School where he would lead that program to the number one state ranking for the first time in twelve years. He was also the head basketball coach at A Plus Academy in Dallas as they entered UIL competition for the first time in school history in 2017 and finished that year with an 18-10 record before heading to Calvert in 2019.
“I’m very excited to have Coach Thomas follow in his father’s footsteps and join the Bronco nation to lead our basketball program,” said Billy Miller, Denton High head football coach and athletic coordinator. “Coach Thomas has a proven track record and a long history of success as head coach. He’s led teams to the state tournament, which is the pinnacle in our profession. I look forward to him building on his legacy and the legacy of his father who once coached here as well. I look forward to seeing the positive impact he will make on our program.”
Coach Thomas has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas at Monticello and a master’s degree in educational administration from Lamar University. Denton High will move to its new location on Bonnie Brae St. this fall. The Broncos will compete in district 7-5A along with Argyle, Colleyville Heritage, Grapevine, Lake Dallas, Birdville, Richland and Ryan High schools.
