Culinary Arts Level Up Tailgating with Student Run Food Truck
Stop by any Texas high school football game on a Friday night in the fall and the smell emanating from concession stands will consume your senses. One would expect chili pies, hot dogs, or popcorn, all staples of the high school football experience, but a Denton ISD student-designed and operated food truck is taking gameday dining to the next level.
LaGrone Academy Chef Debra Reynolds had a different vision for pre-game cuisine and with the help of her culinary arts students, they set out to put that plan into action. At select Denton ISD home games this fall, Chef Reynolds and her students will have the LaGrone Academy Bus Stop Bistro food truck on-site serving up their tastiest pre-game creations.
“The focus of the Bus Stop Bistro is to provide a learning experience for students while advertising to our community the amazing things our LaGrone Academy students can accomplish, and we also offer some really great food,” said Chef Reynolds.
Do gyros, paninis, or loaded tater tots grab your attention? Or how about peanut butter mousse tart or cheesecake tarts? Those are just a few staples you will find on the menu served and prepared by students at the Bus Stop Bistro.
“Students designed and built the Bus Stop Bistro food truck several years ago to be a full culinary kitchen on wheels,” said Chef Reynolds. “Our students gain valuable experience in all aspects of running a mobile restaurant including developing a business plan and the implementation process.”
At 5:30 p.m. on select game nights, fans wanting to experience this unique fare should come to the Home (west) side. Denton ISD culinary arts students will take orders right up until kickoff. Remember to bring cash as the Bistro is currently unable to accept credit cards.
The Bus Stop Bistro food truck club began in 2019 and is supported by culinary students at the LaGrone Academy. All Bus Stop Bistro students are volunteers who donate their time during lunch and after school to participate in the club. All proceeds from the Bistro go to support the food truck program and go back into the program.
Please note that outside food is not allowed into C.H. Collins Athletic Complex, food purchased at the Bus Stop Bistro will be allowed into the stadium.
The Bus Stop Bistro will be curbside at these upcoming home games:
- Sept. 24 (Braswell High v. McKinney Boyd High)
- Oct. 8 (Braswell High v. Guyer High)
- Oct. 22 (Braswell High v. Prosper High)
- Nov. 5 (Denton High v. Frisco Centennial High)
