Onstead Institute / CVAD Alumni Award for Excellence in Art Education
The College of Visual Arts & Design (CVAD) and the Jo Ann (Jody) & Dr. Charles O. Onstead Institute for Education in the Visual Arts & Design at the University of North Texas (UNT) sponsored two awards to honor alumni participating in the 2017 Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) Conference. Each year, CVAD graduates present workshops, demonstrations, and scholarly research that embody the best of UNT’s contribution to art teaching in Texas.
Dorothy P. Adkins Elementary Art Educator, UNT Alumna Kelley Quinn McGee, received this prestigious award in recognition of her work in art education. Her workshop presented research through hands-on demonstration and exploration in early childhood art classes. Sensory Play explained early childhood, kindergarten and first grade, students’ growth through investigation and play-based learning, as well as needed development in their artistic practice or stamina. The session explored implementing sensory learning stations to introduce art concepts through play. Teaching about managing the classroom, writing learning targets, and integrating artists, as well as hands-on investigation of art play.
Established in 2015 and housed within the UNT College of Visual Art & Design (CVAD), the Onstead Institute’s mission is to develop, support, and sustain innovative art and design practices and processes for K-12 education through a program of research, project administration, and public dissemination of information. By partnering with CVAD faculty and students—as well as with schools, museums, galleries, cultural arts organizations, and others throughout the DFW Metroplex—the Onstead Institute functions as a platform that fosters programs, collaborative initiatives, research, and resources at the leading-edge of K-12 art education.
