BHS and DHS Students Compete at State Thespian Festival and Advance to Nationals
Braswell and Denton High School Theatre students competed at the Texas State Thespian Festival November 14-18 at the Gaylord Texas Resort and Conference Center in Grapevine. Denton ISD thespians competed in multiple categories with over 7000 thespians from around the state of Texas. 12 students from Braswell HS and 9 students from Denton HS qualified for the National Thespian Convention in June at the University of Nebraska. In addition to the individual event competitions, students attended workshops and participated in college auditions.
From Braswell HS, sophomore Olivia Wester was nominated and elected to the Texas State Thespian Board as a State Officer. Olivia will work with other student officers from the state to advocate for arts education and plan the 2019 State Festival. Four members of the BHS Improv Troupe competed in an improvisational comedy competition, where the team placed 16th in the state out of 74 schools. Congratulations to BHS Theatre Directors, Michelle Greene and Ben Parker, and students, Arianna Bellolio (Solo Musical), Sarah Butts, Gabrielle “Zoe” Davis (Set Design), Joesy DePalo, Savanah Downing, Melody Henry (Short Film), Madeline Moore (Marketing), Emily Mordecai (Stage Management), Tsunami Simien (Monologue), Giuliano Simmer (Costume Design), Zoe Strong (Group Musical), Olivia Wester (State Thespian Officer), and Dani Wilson.
From Denton HS, the Tech Challenge team, consisting of Isaac Castillo, Calista Martin, Hanna Word, Sophia Kim, Grey Harris, Roya Ghasemi, and Quinlyn Martin, earned 1st place out of 100 plus teams, making it the Best Technical Theatre Team in the entire state of Texas! In addition to that, the DHS thespian troupe had 9 National Qualifiers: *Calista Martin (Costume Construction), Hanna Word and Angelina Gonzalez (Duet Musical), *Jackie Taylor and *Jack Kelley (Duet Musical), Ali Gun (Solo Musical), Noah Waddell (Solo Musical), Roya Ghasemi (Stage Management), and Quinlyn Martin (Stage Management). (*Have advanced to the national level 2 years in a row.) Congraulations to these DHS Thespians and the DHS Theatre Directors, Thomas Stratton and Kerri Peters.
