A-Wop-Bop-a-Loo-Bop!
Celebrating the Crash, Bam, Birth of the Rock & Roll Dream!
In the late 50’s, like an unstoppable force, every kid’s life and loves were filled with Rock & Roll dreams! But sometimes dreams don’t go as planned. So when the local radio station announced that “Rock‘n’Roll has got to go”, the music, the beat, the kids did not listen. Just like the hit BROADWAY musicals GREASE and HAIRSPRAY, this new Jukebox Musicals® tells an original story based around real events. Featuring such hit songs as “Rock Around The Clock”, “Jailhouse Rock”, “Tutti Fruitti”, “Up On the Roof”, “The Loco-Motion”, “I’m Sorry” and “Land Of 1000 Dances”, this show will get a whole NEW generation of “cats and chicks” rockin’ around the clock!
Exciting things about this experience and honor:
The show will be filmed as a part of the process, and could potentially be used for promotional and documentary materials in the history of the show.
This show is going to be published by Music Theatre International, one of the leading publishers of musical theatre. A representative from MTI will be present at the show.
The show was cast in late April, and the students have been working diligently since that point! At the time that we started, we didn't have the final script and music. Throughout the process we have been receiving new pages with new dialogue for the students to learn and for directors to implement into the show. We have also received updated music and new music throughout the process. In fact, we received new music this Friday and Saturday, May 31 and June 1! Students have to learn the new material immediately and put it into the show! With the new music comes new choreography as well, including dance breaks! This has been a fantastic learning experience for the students to see how a new musical comes together and also to meet the challenge of being the first to present a new work.
Starting Tuesday, June 4, Mark Brymer, composer and one of the creators of the new musical will be attending rehearsals.
One of the things that is exciting as a director is the ability to put our stamp on a brand new show - where there are no other precedents already set for the scenery, costume designs choreography, characters and so much more!
