3 Denton HS Students Selected as TMEA All-State Jazz Ensemble Members
High school band students with the goal of making the TMEA All-State Jazz Ensemble begin the audition process in September. Those that are selected for the All-Region Jazz Ensemble earn the opportunity to record an audition for the All-State Jazz Ensemble in October. There are two TMEA All-State Jazz Ensembles that consist of only 20 members each. These students are chosen as the top 40 jazz performers in the state of Texas in 2019-20.
The TMEA audition consists of three pre-determined jazz etudes of varying styles and an improvised solo performed by the student on a one-take recording.
Denton High School has three students selected as All-State Jazz Ensemble members. This is an outstanding accomplishment to have three students from one campus make All-State Jazz considering there are only 40 positions available.
Congratulations to these outstanding DHS Lab Band 1 members and their director, Jesse Woolery.
Eric Crenshaw, Alto Sax 1, TMEA All-State Jazz Ensemble 1
Owen White, Bass, TMEA All-State Jazz Ensemble 1
Matthew Garcia, Tenor Sax 1, TMEA All-State Jazz Ensemble 2
This means that in the entire state of Texas, Eric Crenshaw ranked 1st on alto sax, Owen White ranked 1st on bass, and Matthew Garcia ranked 3rd on tenor sax!
These students will travel to San Antonio in February for the TMEA Convention and perform in concert with the All-State Jazz Ensembles.
Locally, you can hear these students, along with 6 other Denton ISD students, perform in the TMEA All-Region Jazz Ensemble Concert, November 23, at Eaton High School in Northwest ISD.
Many thanks to the DHS band directors, Brian Wilson, Jesse Woolery, and Phillip Elder, and to the private lesson teachers of these students for helping them prepare for their auditions.
