Julie Zwahr Hired as District’s Communications Director
Julie Zwahr has been named the Denton Independent School District’s director of communications and community relations. Ms. Zwahr, who currently serves as the coordinator of communications, will replace Mario Zavala Jr. Mr. Zavala is leaving the district at the end of the month for an executive position in corporate communications.
The director of communications and community relations is a vital role for the district, consistently working with outside groups, organizations and businesses to champion the work and accolades of Denton ISD’s students, teachers and staff. The position also handles all internal and external communication for the district, while serving as the primary contact for the media.
“Ms. Zwahr brings a vast array of knowledge and experience to the table, which is a major asset for a fast-growth district like ours,” said Dr. Jamie Wilson, superintendent of schools. “She has played a large role in many of the community endeavors our district has expanded on over the past five years and will help build on the gains we’ve made with our communication within the district and throughout the community.”
A well-respected public relations professional, Ms. Zwahr brings more than 26 years of experience in school communications to her new role with the district. She’s been an instrumental part of the communications team for the past five years, helping Denton ISD pass a Tax Ratification Election (TRE), a more than $750 million bond package, open five new schools and become one of the most sought-after school districts for social media communication.
Ms. Zwahr has presented on several topics affecting public education at the state and national level, including serving as the South Central Vice President for the National Schools Public Relations Association and holds the distinction of being the youngest professional elected President of the Texas Schools Public Relations Association. She was even part of the committee that recognized the work of several young professionals at the national level, establishing the 35 Under 35 Honor that several communications directors in the North Texas area have been awarded.
“It has been my honor to serve the students and staff of Denton ISD as a member of our district’s award-winning communications team. Building support for public education is my passion and being able to continue to do that as the leader of this dynamic team of professionals is something I look forward to doing,” said Ms. Zwahr. “Our students and teachers consistently provide a number of stories and accomplishments that we can highlight throughout the community, continuing to increase the level of engagement between our schools and stakeholders.”
Ms. Zwahr previously served as the director of communications for Little Elm ISD and Waxahachie ISD and the executive director of communications for Keller ISD and Guilford County Schools in North Carolina. She helped each district through an increase in student enrollment and construction and/or renovations of facilities.
A graduate of Texas Tech University, Ms. Zwahr holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism with a minor in political science. She also completed an independent study on leadership as an undergraduate student.
