¡Bienvenidos! Denton ISD introduces Spanish language duplication of district website
Spanish-speaking persons who visit the Denton ISD website may notice something different when they log on to the homepage. Denton ISD website managers recently created a Spanish version of the district’s website to help navigate the site more easily in their native language. The new website took effect May 1.
In Denton ISD, 16.2 percent of students are currently enrolled in dual language and English Language Learners (ELL) programs. With educators experiencing one of the most challenging years in recent history due to the global pandemic, the need for clear and concise communication to include Spanish-language online access for our families is as important as it's ever been.
With a large percentage of the district's 31,000 students choosing to learn remotely this semester, more students and their families than ever before are seeking resources in their native language. More than ever, Denton ISD is working to provide equitable resources to our Spanish-speaking communities. Denton ISD currently has nearly 5,000 families who have opted to receive all district communications in Spanish.
Spanish duplication of the district website is part of a concerted effort this school year to further assist our Spanish-speaking community. At the start of the year, the district introduced the Bilingual Parent Hotline and the Bilingual Homework Hotline to the community with great success.
The Bilingual Parent Hotline receives about 65 calls per month from parents who speak Spanish. Topics range from how to use Canvas, or how to send emails to teachers to transportation questions, or scheduling needs for students, and more. As the school year comes to a close, the Bilingual Parent Hotline is currently assisting those who call with information on Covid vaccination sites, summer school, Pre-K options, food banks, course credit retrieval, financial aid assistance, rental assistance, utility assistance, help with HAC, and transportation questions. The Bilingual Parent Hotline can be reached at (940) 369-0419 and is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Bilingual Homework Hotline has been just as informative and helpful for students as the Parent Hotline has been for parents and families. In a partnership with TWU and UNT, college volunteers from both campuses will join Denton ISD Bilingual teachers to provide homework and learning support to our 3rd-8th students. The Bilingual Homework Hotline can be reached at (940) 369-0466 and is available from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
