BOARD NOTES – Sept. 13, 2022
Legislative Update from the 88th Legislative Special Sessions
Deron Robinson, General Counsel, provided updates and resources to the Board of Trustees regarding the 87th Legislative Special Sessions and specifically education bills. Mr. Robinson reviewed the new SB15 Virtual Learning the governor signed on September 9, 2021, and went into effect immediately. SB15 allows school districts to set up virtual learning while keeping state funding, enables districts to exercise local control over programming and will expire September 1, 2023.
Bond Progress Report
Kathy Lawson, Co-Chair of the bond progress committee volunteer, provides the Board with an update on the 2018 capital improvement plan. The presentation included an overview of the Bond Progress Committee meeting held on August 31, 2022, at the new Denton High School.
Brandon Boynter, executive director of construction, provided the Board with an overview of Denton ISD construction projects that have recently been completed and also provided an update on those projects still currently in progress.
Fine Arts Annual Report
Jackie DeMontmollin, Director of Fine Arts provided an overview of the 2021-2022 academic year in Fine Arts as to their activities and accomplishments. Jackie mentioned that seniors earned 3.6 million dollars in scholarship offers last April at the Fine Arts Signing Day. Denton ISD for the 15th Consecutive Year has earning the Best Communities for Music Education Award. Jackie also stated the Denton ISD Mariachi program continues to grow.
Athletics Annual Report
Joey Florence, Director of Athletics provided an overview of the 2021-2022 academic year in athletics as to their activities and accomplishments. The District has over 7,195 (grades 7-12) students involved in all forms of athletics. The District has now added water polo as a competition sport for students.
Summer School Programs Report
Dr. Mike Mattingly provided an overview of the District’s Jump Start Program that is scheduled July 18 – July 28 to provide students accelerated learning for elementary, middle, or high school students as well as credit recovery or dual credit options for secondary students.
2022 - 2023 Enrollment Update
The purpose of this report is to provide the Board of Trustees with a summary of Denton ISD’s enrollment, for the 2022–2023 school year and to compare this data to previous years. The analysis of Denton ISD’s enrollment data allows the district to ensure that all campuses remain in compliance with state class size requirements. It also allows the district to ensure that plans are developed to meet current and future needs of the district. As of this meeting Denton ISD has 32,547 students enrolled.
