Welcome to Calhoun Middle School

  • Opened in 1924, Calhoun Middle School was originally named Denton Junior High School until 1968 – during which time the mascot was the Colts. In 1969, the campus was renamed to Congress Junior High School, and the mascot was changed to the Cougars.

The school was renamed Calhoun Middle School in 1982 after A.O. “Prof” Calhoun, who was the principal of Denton High School for 33 years until his retirement in 1957. For the past century, the campus has been located on Congress Street.

In Fall 2024, Calhoun will move to its new location and campus off Fulton Street, on the site of the old Denton High School. Upon moving to its new campus, Calhoun’s mascot will shift back to the Colts.

Calhoun is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School and is a major part of the district’s commitment to IB education. Calhoun serves students in the Denton High School attendance zone.
